Quick Answer

Who is Tacoma Shuttle?

Tacoma Shuttle & Airport Transportation is a privately-owned ground transportation company founded in Tacoma, Washington in 2015. The company was started by a single Tacoma local who began with one vehicle and one phone line, primarily serving the Tacoma-to-SeaTac airport route. Over the next decade it expanded into a full multi-vehicle fleet — sedans, SUVs, passenger vans, Mercedes Sprinters, and 25-to-55-passenger coach buses — and ten distinct service categories including weddings, corporate accounts, cruise port transfers, group charters, and Pacific Northwest day tours. Tacoma Shuttle is locally owned and locally operated, not a franchise or national chain. It is not affiliated with Shuttle Express, Capital Aeroporter, or any rideshare network. Every chauffeur, dispatcher, and team member lives and works in Tacoma or surrounding Pierce County. The company maintains three founding principles unchanged since 2015: flat-rate pricing with no surge, private vehicles with no shared rides, and real humans on every call 24 hours a day.

Our story

From one car to a fleet.

"I was tired of friends getting stranded at SeaTac at 4 AM. So I started picking them up. That was 2015."

— Founder, Tacoma Shuttle

Tacoma Shuttle started in 2015 with one car, one phone, and one Tacoma local who'd had enough of the airport-shuttle status quo.

The Tacoma-to-SeaTac corridor has always been a frustrating one. Twenty-five miles of I-5, unpredictable traffic, and a SeaTac terminal that doesn't reward people who arrive late. Yet the local options, in 2015, were thin: shared shuttles that took two hours and made eight stops, taxis that surged on weekends, rideshares that disappeared at 4 AM. Travelers were quietly miserable about ground transportation, and most of them just accepted it.

Our founder didn't accept it. After picking up too many friends and family stranded at the curb, he decided to do the thing the existing market refused to do — show up early, charge a flat rate, and treat the customer like a guest, not a fare. He bought a single sedan, set up a phone number, and started taking calls.

That was the entire business plan. Be the operator you'd want to ride with.

The first year was learning the route, the regulars, the rhythm. The 4 AM customers who needed to be at the gate by 5:30. The Lakewood family that flew to Vegas every quarter. The Gig Harbor couple who took the cruise to Alaska every summer and needed Pier 91 on a specific Saturday. Word-of-mouth carried it. A reliable driver in a town that hadn't seen one in a while turned out to be a hot commodity.

By 2018 we'd added an SUV. By 2020 — through the worst stretch the transportation industry has seen — a passenger van. We kept driving when most operators paused, because the people who still needed to fly still needed to get there. The customers we picked up during the pandemic became customers for life, and they brought us their weddings, their company offsites, their kids' field trips.

Today the fleet covers sedans, SUVs, 10-passenger vans, 14-passenger Mercedes Sprinters, and coach buses up to 55 passengers. We dispatch every day of the year. We run ten distinct service categories from airport runs to wedding logistics to JBLM military movements. We're licensed across Pierce County and South King County.

But the way we run it hasn't changed since the first car. Real humans answer every phone call. Prices don't surge, ever. Every vehicle is private — no shared rides, no extra stops, no waiting on strangers. Drivers are local, not gig-app contractors who learned Tacoma yesterday. The phone number on our website is the same one that picked up your friend at SeaTac in 2017.

We're not a franchise. We're not a rideshare aggregator. We're not a national network with a Tacoma branch. We're one Tacoma operator that grew on the back of doing it right the first time. And we plan to keep being exactly that.

A decade of driving Tacoma

From one car to ten services.

Ten years of milestones — every one of them earned by showing up early.

2015 · The beginning

One car, one phone.

Tacoma Shuttle is founded by a Tacoma local with a single sedan and a single phone line. Tacoma-to-SeaTac becomes the company's first and only route.

2017 · Word-of-mouth

The first hundred regulars.

Repeat customers from Lakewood, University Place, and Gig Harbor make up most of the bookings. We add scheduled service for frequent flyers.

2018 · Fleet grows

Adding the first SUV.

Family travelers and small groups push us to add an SUV to the fleet. Same flat-rate model, same chauffeur standard.

Beyond the airport.

First wedding shuttle bookings. First cruise transfers to Pier 91. The business expands beyond pure airport service for the first time.

2020 · Driving through

The pandemic.

While much of the industry pauses, we keep dispatching for essential travelers. Customers we picked up that year became customers for life.

·20
·21

Group capacity unlocked.

10-passenger vans join the fleet. Family reunions, sports teams, and JBLM military movements become regular bookings.

Up to 55 passengers.

DOT-certified motor coaches added for large weddings, conferences, and school field trips. Fleet now spans sedan to 55-passenger coach.

Same rules. Same phone number.

A decade later, the founding principles haven't changed: flat-rate, private, real humans, on time. The phone number on day one is the same number today.

Three rules, unchanged since 2015

The way we still run it.

Most companies update their values when the marketing changes. We've kept the same three since the first car. They're the entire reason customers stay with us, and they're non-negotiable.

RULE 01

Real humans, always.

Every call to (253) 666-6560 is answered by a Tacoma local — not a phone tree, not a chatbot, not a national call center. We've never used hold music, automated triage, or AI receptionists. If you call at 3 AM, a human picks up at 3 AM.

RULE 02

Flat rate, never surge.

What we quote is what you pay. Holiday morning, blizzard at 4 AM, last-minute booking — same rate. No peak pricing, no demand multipliers, no surprise fees at the curb. Uber surges to $130; we stay at $89. That's the entire promise.

RULE 03

Private vehicles, no exceptions.

When you book with us, the entire vehicle is yours. No other passengers, no extra stops, no waiting on strangers. We've never offered shared rides, and we never will. If you're paying for ground transportation, you should actually receive ground transportation — not a slow group tour.

Why local matters

Tacoma-owned. Tacoma-driven.

We're not a national franchise. We're not the local branch of a Seattle company. We're not the Tacoma listing for a rideshare aggregator. We're a privately-held, independently-operated Tacoma business — and that distinction shows up in every trip you take with us.

Our chauffeurs live in Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Gig Harbor. They take their kids to school here. They know which I-5 lane closes at which exit, which Narrows backups to avoid, and the quickest cut-through to the SEA arrivals deck at any hour of any day.

Our dispatch team is staffed by Pacific Northwest residents, not an offshore call center. When you describe "the corner of 6th and Pearl," we know exactly where you mean. When your flight is delayed at 11 PM, we don't need a flight number explained to us in Manila and re-explained to a driver in Tacoma — we handle it directly.

And every dollar you spend with us stays in the Tacoma economy. Local fuel stops. Local mechanics. Local insurance brokers. Local everything. That's the kind of detail that compounds over a decade.

  • 01
    Locally owned

Privately held by a Tacoma resident since 2015. No outside investors, no franchise license, no national parent company.

  • 02
    Tacoma-resident chauffeurs

Every driver lives in Pierce County. They know the routes, the traffic patterns, and the customers — many by name.

  • 03
    PNW-based dispatch

Real humans answering in Tacoma, not a routed call center. They know "the bridge" means the Narrows and "the dome" means the Tacoma Dome.

  • 04
    Local-economy spend

Local fuel, local mechanics, local insurance, local everything. Your booking dollar stays in the Tacoma area economy.

  • 05
    Community-rooted

Long-term partnerships with Tacoma hotels, wedding venues, JBLM coordinators, and Pierce County employers we've worked with for years.
