Every airport run from Gig Harbor crosses the Tacoma Narrows in the tolled direction, on the only span there is. There's no free alternative crossing and no detour worth taking — which is exactly why the lead time we set from Gig Harbor is longer than from anywhere else we serve. The toll's in your rate. The buffer's in your pickup time.
A private shuttle from Gig Harbor to SeaTac Airport starts at $115 for a sedan carrying up to 3 passengers. SUVs, vans, and Sprinters are quoted per trip. The rate covers the entire vehicle, not each seat, and the eastbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll is included — along with gratuity. No surge pricing, no off-hours surcharge: a 4 AM pickup costs what a 4 PM pickup costs.
The drive is roughly 40 miles and 45 to 65 minutes, via SR-16, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and I-5 North. Two things about that bridge shape this entire route. First, it's tolled in one direction only — eastbound, toward Tacoma — which happens to be the exact direction every airport trip travels. Coming home is free. Second, and more importantly: there is no free alternative crossing of Puget Sound in that area. One span, no detour.
That's why we set a longer lead time from Gig Harbor than from anywhere else we serve. Not because the drive is far — Lakewood is a comparable distance — but because Lakewood has three ways to reach I-5 and Gig Harbor has one. We check the bridge before every pickup and build the buffer on the assumption that the crossing is the risk. Because it is.
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is tolled one way. Unhelpfully for anyone catching a flight, it's the way you're going.
| Direction | Which span | Tolled? | What it costs | When you do it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EastboundGig Harbor → Tacoma | The 2007 span | Tolled | ~$4.50–6.50fixed, any hour | Every trip to the airport. Included in your rate. |
| WestboundTacoma → Gig Harbor | The 1950 span | Free | $0not tolled | Every trip home from the airport. |
From Tacoma, if I-5 seizes up, your driver takes SR-99. From Lakewood, there are three separate on-ramps within five minutes. From Puyallup, there's SR-512 and there's SR-167. Every other route we run has a plan B.
From Gig Harbor, there isn't one. WSDOT states it plainly: there is no free alternative bridge crossing of Puget Sound in that area. The land route around the head of the inlet — up through Purdy, around toward Belfair and Bremerton — adds an hour or more and is not a serious option for someone with a flight. If something closes the Narrows, you are not going around it. You are waiting.
So we treat the crossing as the risk, because it is the risk. Bridge conditions and WSDOT incident reports are checked before every Gig Harbor pickup, and the lead time we set is longer than the drive time strictly requires. That's not padding — it's the only sensible response to a single point of failure between you and your gate.
It's also, quietly, the strongest argument for booking a car at all from this side of the water. A rideshare driver won't know the bridge is backed up until they're on it with you.
WSDOT incident reports and live conditions, an hour before we leave.
3 hours domestic, 4 hours international. The crossing earns the extra half hour.
Eastbound every time, and you never see it as a line item.
Not someone who accepted a ping and is discovering the Narrows in real time.
Forty miles, three roads, one bridge. Here is how it actually runs.
Downtown by the waterfront, up in Canterwood, out at Artondale or Rosedale, across to Fox Island, or down the Key Peninsula. The driver texts on arrival and loads your bags. Your rate was calculated from that exact address, which is why a Key Center pickup isn't priced like a Point Fosdick one.
The peninsula's spine. Everything funnels here — which is fine at 4 AM and considerably less fine at 7:30 on a weekday, when the whole of Gig Harbor is trying to get to work in Tacoma.
Eastbound, on the 2007 span, in the tolled direction. The toll is fixed and it's already in your quote. This is also the mile that decides your morning: it's the only crossing, and if it's blocked there is no way around it. Which is why we checked it before we left.
Past the Narrows, down through west Tacoma, and onto northbound I-5 at the interchange. From here it's the same corridor every one of our routes uses.
The familiar stretch. When it stalls, drivers cut to SR-99 or SR-509 — and here, at last, there are alternatives. The free part of the route is the part with options.
Up to the Departures level, curbside at your airline's specific door. Bags out, done.
Rates are calculated by distance from your exact address, so where you are on the peninsula genuinely matters to the number. All of it is served.
The historic harbour, Harborview Drive, the marinas, Skansie Brothers Park, and the Harbor History Museum.
The golf and country club community. A frequent black-car and corporate-account pickup for us.
The newer growth above the harbour, near Uptown Gig Harbor and the retail core.
South of the harbour toward the bridge approach — the fastest corner of the peninsula for an airport run.
The quieter western and northern reaches. Add a little time to reach SR-16 from here.
Across the Fox Island Bridge. We collect at the door — there's no realistic alternative from out here.
The northern gateway, where SR-16 meets SR-302 and the Key Peninsula begins.
Key Center, Home, Vaughn, Longbranch. A long way from anywhere, and precisely why people out here book a car rather than improvise.
11567 Canterwood Blvd NW. Appointments, discharges, and onward transfers.
The general-aviation field is in Gig Harbor, at 1202 26th Ave NW. If your private flight leaves from there rather than SEA, tell us — it's a very different trip.
Pier 91 and Pier 66, direct from the peninsula. Cruise luggage handled, embarkation timed.
Kopachuck, Sehmel Homestead, Peninsula High, the marinas. If it's on the peninsula, we come to it.
On most of our routes, transit is a genuine option and we say so. From this side of the water, it mostly isn't — and that changes the whole comparison.
